Mr. Mor thanks Mr. Markham for his kind words. He says that he will get a better fo photo next time. The proof that he sent had the wrong addressand he just got it back today. But the poem was fortunately printed correctly.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
